The potteries of Konigliche Porzrllen Manufaktur (KPM) in Meissen, Germany, made the first European-produced household goods of porcelain in 1710. By the 1840s, the KPM facilities at Meissen and Berlin pioneered the production of china doll heads. The KPM dolls are distinctive for the high quality of the porcelain and for the fine detail of the molding and hand-painted features. KPM doll heads often sport uncommon brown hair highlighted by paint strokes of darker and lighter shades. This doll head, of course, has not been painted, but the distinctive detail of the molding is apparent.
