Yla Easton founded Olmec Toys, a multicultural toy company, in 1985. Easton developed the company after she was unable to find an African American superhero figure for her son. In 1988, Olmec released a line of action figures named the Bronze Bombers. Additional products included Learning Kids, Sun-Man, Naomi fashion doll, and Butterfly Woman, among others. Olmec also released the Hip-Hop Kids, dolls with the motto: “We’re into everything that’s cool, like music, rhymes and school.” Easton wanted her brand of playthings to promote self-pride.
