Jules Nicholas Steiner learned the skills of a clock maker and applied his talents to the manufacture of mechanical toys and dolls. He founded a toy-making firm in 1855 and filed several patents for the mechanical workings of his toys. Steiner sold his factory, but the firm continued to make dolls with the Steiner name until 1905.
