Mattel first introduced the Ken doll in 1961. For more than 50 years, Ken has had his own line of activities, careers, and hobbies, however, he is most often treated as an accessory to Barbie. In 2017, Mattel re-imagined the all-American guy and released a new line of Ken dolls. The new Ken dolls feature three body types (slim, broad, and original), seven skin tones, nine hairstyles, and modern, fashionable clothes. These new versions are intended to help children personalize the role of Ken in Barbie_s world and to better reflect the multicultural world American kids inhibit.
