Combing and styling doll hair has long been a significant part of doll play. For as long as dollmakers supplied dolls with pliable and durable "hair" of any material, little girls have spent hours and hours transforming doll hair into exotic 'dos. For example, Mattel's Totally Hair Barbie was the best-selling Barbie ever. More than 10 million of these dolls sold in the year it was introduced, 1992. Before Totally Hair Barbie, however, various dollmakers offered dolls whose main feature was hair to manipulate, wash, style, perm, or color. In 1968, Ideal offered Crissy, a doll whose hair could be pulled out from the top of her head or retracted by means of twisting a small knob on the doll's back. Crissy wore a short bob or tresses to her ankles at the whim of her little owner. The Crissy doll proved so popular that Ideal released a whole family of dolls, including Kerry, and a variety of fashions for the dolls to wear.
