This doll is from the Li'l Souls line (cloth doll line) of the Shindana company. This company started in the 1970s in Los Angeles as an African-American collective group of toy makers. Their original financing was backed by Chase Manhattan Bank, Mattel, and others. The company name is Swahili and means "to compete." In addition to the cloth doll line, they also had plastic dolls and many dolls referencing positive celebrities and figures in the African American community.
