According to Madame Alexander herself, her love of Margaret Mitchell's 1930s classic, "Gone with the Wind," inspired her to create a doll of Scarlett O'Hara, the book's main character. "It is the only book I have started from the beginning and did not put down until finished. I remember starting it Saturday morning after breakfast and never left my room until Sunday. I stayed up all night and it is remarkable that I did not feel any need for sleep. On Monday I went into my studio and started to work and I am happy to report that everything went smoothly and I made no corrections. She (Scarlett) has been very rewarding and has made many people happy." (p. 216, Madame Alexander Dolls 1965-1990 by Patricia Smith1991.) Indeed, the Scarlett doll still sells very well several decades later.
