Founded by Beatrice Alexander Behrman, the Alexander Doll Company issued its first dolls in 1923. Ever since, the dolls produced by the company have been a staple of every middle-class American girl's doll collection. The Alexander dolls are still popular among little girls, and of course among big girl collectors too. Madame Alexander produced dolls representing many characters of favorite childhood stories such as Alice in Wonderland, Little Women, Cinderella, Snow White, and others. Other popular dolls depicted popular movie stars of the day like Jane Withers and Sonja Heinie. Still other dolls represented personalities and characters from popular culture--the Dionne quints, Scarlett O'Hara, and the USA's First Ladies. For decades, the company used an advertising slogan that still appears on packing boxes today: "The most beautiful dolls in the world are made by Madame Alexander."
