In 1928 Frank Daniel Gerber, head of the Fremont Canning Co. in Michigan searched for a baby face to promote his line of strained baby foods. Connecticut artist Dorothy Hope Smith provided the a sketch of a bright-eyed, tousled-hair, healthy-looking infant that Gerber adopted as its corporate image. The Gerber Baby remains an iconic product image to this day. Dolls made to resemble the Gerber Baby appeared in several iterations including ones offered in 1936, 1955, 1972, 1985, and 1996.
