Nigel Tufnel is a fictional character played by Christopher Guest in the 1984 mockumentary film, "This is Spinal Tap." The film follows a fictional British heavy metal band on their US tour, and traces the stages of the bands career, from the early days of the British Invasion, to the psychedelic period, to the present--tight spandex pants, mullets, and loud solos. In a 1984 "New York Times" review of the film, Janet Maslin noted "the most appealing thing about "This is Spinal Tap," aside form the obvious enthusiasm of all concerned, is the accompanying lack of condescension. Mr. Guest, in particular, does a wonderful job of capturing his character's sincere idiocy." In one scene, Nigel throws a fit about the sandwich bread not being the same shape as the cold cuts. In another scene, Nigel explains that he is working on a new piece of music that is "part of a trilogy, a musical trilogy. I'm working on a D minor, which is the saddest of all keys." The public loved the film and it still has a cult following.
