The Bru doll-making company operated in France from 1866 to 1899. First known for its bisque head "poupee" dolls depicting French women in the latest Paris fashions, the company began producing dolls representing children in the 1870s. Bru became best known for these child dolls called b??��b??��s. This doll is an example of a "Circle and Dot" Bru, which were made between 1879 and 1884. This designation comes from circle and dot markings on the back of the head, which were results of the molding. Although they are helpful in determining the age of the doll, these markings were not intended to be a maker's signature.
