The scientist Dolores Cebrián with her husband, the politician Julián Besteiro. Dolores Cebrián (1881–1973) and Julián Besteiro (1870–1940) formed one of the most prominent couples in spanish intellectual and socialist circles of the early 20th century. Julián Besteiro was an influential Spanish professor, philosopher, and socialist politician, a central figure of the Second Republic and democratic socialism. He chose not to go into exile and remained in Madrid when Franco's troops arrived. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison and died in Carmona prison in 1940. Following Julián Besteiro's imprisonment and subsequent death, his wife Dolores Cebrián endured a harsh «internal exile» marked by political and professional repression.
