Muromachi period, 15th century

Tokyo, Japan

Complete with helmet and arm guards, this is a representative example of Domaru style armor. The metal fittings feature an arabesque design and delicately crafted paulownia tree stalks. Blue and crimson lacing is used to bind the plates together – a style that is known as kashidori as well as matsukawa. This was formerly the property of the Akita family, who were the lords of Mihara fief in Mutsu province.
