1934

National Museum of Australia

National Museum of Australia
Canberra, Australia

Cricketer Don Bradman is regarded as the greatest test batsman of all time and continues to hold the record for highest test batting average at 99.94. His batting prowess led the 1932–33 English touring team to adopt the controversial Bodyline bowling strategy for that year’s Ashes series.

The inscription on this Sykes ‘Don Bradman’ brand, full-size cricket bat reads, ‘This bat was used by me in the first test match between Eng v Australia at Nottingham 1934. To D.L.Cromb with very best wishes for a happy birthday from Don Bradman 17.8.34.’

The bat has also been signed by members of the Australian and English cricket teams.
