Donkey's head

This painting was created for a scholarship competition promoted by the Academia Portuense de Belas Artes to study Fine Arts overseas. It was painted towards the end of 1879, when Henrique Pousão was finishing his studies in the Academia. In this study Pousão’s capacity in capturing the expressiveness of the subject (rendering the donkey's head almost with human-like expression) and the vibrant background are hallmarks of his style and work.
