William ordered a survey of his new kingdom. Created around AD 1086, the Domesday Book was written as a report of a survey of land and wealth in England 1086. It brought gloom to ordinary people because everything was meticulously recorded: there was no escaping taxes and tithes. The Domesday Book depicts a thriving and complex Britain.
