Carlo Maria Colombo was an outstanding gunsmith. He was awarded numerous prizes for the quality of his products and the improvements he made to the mechanisms of guns. Also a dealer and a restorer, he was the principal supplier of ancient weapons to the Poldi Pezzoli collection.
In the middle of the 19th century he made for Gian Giacomo a carbine, a pair of pistols for target shooting and this shotgun. The butt, made of walnut root, is decorated with a lion killing a serpent and a winged dragon below. On the trigger guard appear the initials “PP”, showing the gun was made for Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli. The maker’s name appears on the barrels: “Colombo in Milano”.
