Double bass, gamba shape with flat back (typical of Northern English made instruments), body made of sprice or pine, neck made of sycamore or maple and fingerboard and tail piece both made of ebony.
Maker's stamps on back of neck and on tail piece "Dearlove / Maker / Leeds". Remains of printed label inside also reads "...Love / Leeds, plus handwritten label:
"This Double Bass made by Mr M Dearlove - violin and bass maker for the Great Industrial Exhibition of all Nations, Crystal Palace, London 1851."
There are also some letters written on the shoulder of the instrument (AB & AD) which may be references to musical notes to be played.
Has been repaired many times. Neck, strings and tailpiece currently detatched from instrument, together with the bridge.
