Marie Krøyer started her artistic training in the early 1880s. She had lessons in drawing and painting at private art schools in Copenhagen, as women were not admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts at the time. She spent the winter 1888/89 in Paris, where she became a part of the Scandinavian circle of artists, which also counted the 16 year older P.S. Krøyer. They fell in love, were engaged and got married in 1889.
