“Mother and Child” is the resonant epithet of this exquisite double virginal from Antwerp. A hidden opening houses a smaller instrument, pitched an octave higher, which can be placed on the main instrument and played along with it. The unusualness of this double virginal sets it apart from the rectangular and polygonal virginals common in the domestic sphere.
