Beginning in the 1940s, Museum paleontologist E.H. Colbert and his team excavated dozens of Coelophysis skeletons from the fossil quarry at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. That type of deposit, in which a whole population of animals was preserved together, is known as a "death assemblage."
