Museo de Zaragoza
Zaragoza, Spain

Doña Juana secluded in the palatial part of the Santa Clara convent in Tordesillas. On the left side of the composition, the queen appears seated by a large window, with her daughter Catherine.
In the background, a door reveals the coffin of Felipe el Hermoso in a dark room. In front of the great hearth-fireplace, two seated women accompany the sovereign.
The atmosphere of desolation and sadness is evident in this representation. The work is highly theatrical, a quality characteristic of the historical genre and the aesthetics of the time.
