Dr. Channing's Last Address Delivered at Lenox, on the First of August, 1842, at the Anniversary of Emancipation of the British West Indies

The August 1 anniversary of Emancipation in the British West Indies in 1834 was an important occasion celebrated by black and abolitionist communities and used as an opportunity to gather in support of the American abolition movement. However, in this sermon Unitarian minister William Ellery Channing disavows any official affiliation with the abolition movement, but instead positions his judgment about the evils of slavery as his own independent evaluation of "what seems to be the truth" based on his firsthand experiences in the West Indies and the United States.
