Dr. Edith Clarke (1883-1959) was a major figure in electrical engineering. She was the first woman to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a degree in electrical engineering and was the first woman to present a paper before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. She published tables of calculations that simplified work for engineers in designing power transmission lines. She retired form GE in 1945 to teach electrical engineering at the University of Texas.
