Nicola says: "I painted Emma in profile against a plain background, like an early Renaissance portrait, because I wanted to suggest the well rounded person that she is. I already knew Emma as a friend and enjoy discussing literature with her at the book club we are both in, sometime while she is knitting. I know there have been many hard times for her and her colleagues during this crisis. I think Emma's expression is interesting; the sideways glance is ambiguous but suggests wisdom and humour."

Emma says: "I love this painting, it feels like it is really me. A middle-aged woman, an Emergency Physician, at the height of the pandemic filled with both immense sadness but also pride and love for my life's work, for the NHS, for the community I serve.... As one of my colleagues said, it looks like you have just cracked a bad joke, or said something a bit cheeky... and I probably had."
