It wasn’t that long ago when people with disabilities in Australia were segregated in institutions, neglected and left to die. Abuse and neglect is still rife in disability services, hence a National Senate Inquiry, and institutionalisation still exists, but on a smaller scale. When it comes to support to live independently in this country, people still have to wait for too long for too little but activists like the late Stella Young and Lesley Hall campaigned for a National Disability Insurance Scheme.
