The house at 17 Gough Square was built at the end of the 17th century for Richard Gough, a wool merchant. Samuel Johnson, creator of 'A Dictionary of the English Language' lived and worked in the house from 1748 until 1759. The house was restored by the politician Cecil Harmsworth and his architect Alfred Burr, and was opened to the public in 1914.
