During the 1940s the restoration of the Theatre began under the supervision of the eminent theatre historian Dr Richard Southern together with architect and expert on the historical development of theatre buildings, Richard Leacroft. After the theatre closed in 1848, the pit and area under the stage had been covered over and used as a wine vault. Southern and Leacroft’s research led to the rediscovery of these areas.
