The École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts provided education free for all students and treated all students equally, but the Prix de Rome did not permit foreign students to participate. Although Xu Beihong passed the entrance exam, he did not participate in the Prix de Rome competition at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.
Draft for the Slave and the Lion was made in 1924, as a sketch for his oil painting of the same name. Xu Behong made the work according to the Prix de Rome requirements.
