President Harry S. Truman wrote this letter, which he never sent, to Elmo Roper, who conducted a number of polls during the lead up to the 1948 election. Most polls showed Republican candidate Thomas Dewey with a commanding lead going into the month of October, and many pollsters stopped taking polls, just as Truman began to make a stronger showing with the electorate.
