Charlotte, United States

In the late 19th century, American art pottery styles were profoundly influenced by Japanese ceramics. Rookwood Pottery pursued a Japanese-inspired style, and in 1887 hired Kataro Shirayamadani, an artist from Kanazawa, Japanese, to help in this endeavor. On this vase, Shirayamadani skillfully combined naturalistically painted foliage with imaginative depictions of dragons.
