Draugen

Theodor Kittelsen

Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum

Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum
Tromsø, Norway

The mythological Norwegian sea monster coming out of the water, attacking a boat in a heavy storm.
Draugen is an evil ghost or spirit of someone who has drowned at sea. It is a warning that something bad will happen if you see or hear it!

Kittelsen studied in München and Paris for eleven years but had to return back home caused by lack of financial support for his artistry. Upon his return to Norway, he lived with his sister and her husband in Kragerø, who he also followed when his brother in law got a job in Lofoten as a keeper of a lighthouse. He stayed with them for two years. He is best known for his epic fairytale paintings and drawings and is said to be the person who defined how the Norwegian troll looks like.
