Ford officially purchased the building from the First Baptist Church and completely revamped its appearance. He redesigned the theatre’s layout, expanding into the two adjoining lots to add an enlarged dressing room and a saloon. Construction began in February 1863 and the renamed Ford’s New Theatre opened on August 27 to rave reviews.
