The University of Vienna was one of the best universities in Europe for science and medicine. Freud enrolled in 1873, taking classes in anatomy, chemistry, botany, physiology and physics.

He soon became an expert in neuroanatomy and published several studies of the nervous systems of fish. This particular drawing by Freud is of the spinal nerve cells in Petromyzon Planeri, 1878.
