Dream of Hanbando

Trees get pushed over by industrialization and development, can no longer live in their own land and get sold as landscaping or gardening trees for the city. They seem to be self-representations of contemporary people who wander in metropolitan cities or advanced industrial countries. The beauty of landscaping trees is the crystallization of their tears, struggling to survive in a strange land. Son bong- chae leaves us the following question with his work, Dream of Hanbando (2015). “When we think about how many trees ended up dying, failing to settle down in the new land, can we really say that they are ‘beautiful’? How many people today wander on the urban borders, struggling in loneliness to put down roots?” Son bong-chae’s piece is a dedication to all on the borders, an ode to all who are making it through the day.
