Dred Scott's petition for freedom

Dred Scott signed this petition, the first step in a long battle for freedom. Because enslaved people were prohibited from learning to read or write, Scott left his mark—an “X”—at the bottom of the page. A decade passed before the landmark case reached the Supreme Court.
