Scarf, c. 1850. French or English. Silk.
American women who put together ensembles like this one were following French fashion. The silks, as well as the styles, were probably produced in France. The complicated sleeve decoration, pattern-woven shawl, ribbon belt and buckle, beaded reticule, and complex hairstyle all combined to create layers of pattern and ornamentation.
