Typical of beadwork hide dresses of the late nineteenth century, this example features a blue-ground yoke, which crosses the garment at the shoulders and chest, from sleeve to sleeve. Blue was the favored color for such dresses and usually represented water. The availability of trade beads allowed Sioux artists to be more innovative and elaborate with their designs than using quills, which were more difficult to obtain and work into the garment.
