The Victoria and Albert Museum
London, United Kingdom

This dress was worn by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (1840-1910). When it came into the museum's collections it was accompanied by a label inscribed "His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales' silk frock in 1843. Same frock as in picture." The picture referred to is a portrait of the Prince as a young child of about three standing against a large claw-footed seat on which rests a black hat trimmed with white feather plumes. It was painted for Queen Victoria in 1843 by the artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873), and is in the Royal Collections.
