The delicacy of the printed textiles in costumes from about 1840 is especially evocative of the ideal of femininity at the time, when the romantic exaggeration of the 1830s waned into sentimentality. Women enjoyed an increasing choice of printed fabrics. Semi-abstract patterns and softer floral were popular, and the new delaine fabric enabled calico printers to offer deeper and more brilliant colors.
