Broderie anglaise—also known as eyelet embroidery—was very popular from the mid-19th to early 20th century. Delicate fabric was originally embroidered by hand. With the introduction of the embroidery machine came an increase in production volume, and fine fabric was used to make ladies' and girls' dresses as well as sophisticated lingerie. In the 1950s, broderie anglaise experienced a fashionable comeback.
