Drop-down dresser

This drop-down dresser very well embodies the characteristics of
furniture made in Lombardy in the mid-18th century. The structure is curved and
rounded and entirely veneered in walnut-root, embellished with frames in
black-stained wood that surround the surfaces - in a purely decorative design
that does not take into account the functional distribution of the drawers. This type of ornamentation was inspired
both by German and Austrian cabinetmaking and by Lombard ecclesiastical furnishings,
which were influenced by the wave of renewal following the Council of Trent,
even before it reached the domestic sector. The reference models were Baroque, Roman
and German, culled from the widespread engravings of decorations and from the
experience of Lombard woodcarvers and stucco-workers who travelled across the
Alps.
