In its time, Duke and Sons Tobacco firm was probably the largest such company in Durham, North Carolina. As an incentive to consumers to buy their products, they would place inserts into each package, sometimes picturing famous people, sometimes Civil War generals, and sometimes Presidential candidates. The Lockwood example is one of their rarest if not the rarest of all of their politically themed cards, probably indicating a lack of public demand for her image, at least among smokers.
