In 2007, Dumfries House, its contents and the grounds were put up for sale on the open market. Just weeks before the treasured collection of furniture was due to go on sale at auction, HRH Prince Charles, The Duke of Rothesay intervened to save the estate from dispersal by taking out a private loan and bringing together a consortium of charities, government, individuals and heritage bodies.
