When gutta percha became the preferred material for the manufacture of golf balls, it was found that the balls flew higher, straighter and further if the surface of the ball was marked. The bramble or 'pimple' pattern of marking on gutta percha balls was discontinued as the raised areas flattened with use, reducing its effectiveness.
