Duplicate of Tuanshan Silk Fan Given by Tagore to Mei Lanfang

On May 19th, 1924, the renowned Peking Opera artist Mei Lanfang (1894-1961) performed The Nymph of the Luo River in Kaiming Theater at the invitation of the visiting poet Tagore. At the farewell dinner on the second day, Tagore, after speaking highly of Mei’s performance, improvised a poem in Bengali and inscribed it on a tuanshan silk fan with its English translation, and gave it to Mei as a gift. Tagore also recited the poem in high spirit to the attendants. The Chinese poet Lin Changming who was at present then translated the poem into Li Sao-style ancient Chinese language and also marked it down on the fan. The three language versions of Chinese, English and Bengali on the same single small fan made it a witness of international relationship.
