Dutch mansions in Nagasaki

19th Century

Chester Beatty

Chester Beatty
Dublin, Ireland

From the early sixteenth to the late nineteenth century, all foreigners were excluded from Japan, except for a limited number of Dutch and Chinese merchants who were allowed to trade from the port of Nagasaki. These foreigners were a source of endless fascination for the Japanese. This portion of a painted handscroll shows scenes of everyday life in the Dutch living quarters, in the meticulous Nagasaki School painting style.
