A glowing sunset behind him, a workman returns home, his dog leading the way along the canal road. At river's edge, water, windmills, a small boat, and a storehouse are reflected in the water. Though likely arranged at the artist's fancy, the scene is precisely painted, down to the riverbank plants defined with small, sure strokes.
Born in Brussels, Charles Leickert trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the Hague. There he studied under Wijnand Nuijen as well as the great Romantic painter Andreas Schelfhout. A specialist in landscape, especially winter scenes, Leickert moved to Amsterdam in 1849. There he painted city views and became a member of Amsterdam's Royal Academy. He spent his last years in Germany.
