Coleoptera Scarabeidae. Also called Hercules beetle, it is the longest coleopter in the world and may reach 17 cm in length. Besides the front horns of the male, they are characterized by the black forepart and yellow dotted liter with brown round spots. Immediately after the emergence, elitra appear white with a soft exoskeleton. They live either in the coastal forests or in mountains over 1000 meters. Larvae, which look particularly big, feed on decaying wood, whereas adults prefer to lap the lymph dripping from the trees. Those bumps noticeable on males of the subfamily of Dynastinae might have the same function as horns of deers or the Lucanus Cervus, i.e. to fight for the females. However, observing their battles, these horns seem to be more of a hindrance than a help. In fact, only few species are able to use them effectively during the fight. Many cartoons have been inspired by this insect, such as the Heracross character in the Pokemon series and the Tentomon character in the Digimon series. Given its beauty, it is often bred by specific passionate fans. Pietro Castellano collection.
