The Hercules beetle is one of the largest insects in the world, with males reaching up to 180mm. They are used as a model for studying sexual selection as they use the large horns as weapons to compete for females. The horns are used to squeeze and lift opponents before tossing them to the ground or flipping them onto their back! They are named after Hercules, a hero of classical mythology renowned for his strength.
